Fungus Amongst Us!
This week's story entitled "My dishwasher is trying to kill me" might have been overly dramatic, but it does remind us of a key issue in device reprocessing - bio burden can build up over time and represent a threat to patients and health care workers alike. Almost on a weekly basis we have stories about biofilm and the dangers these pose to water supply, reprocessing equipment and medical devices. In all of these cases, it is a failure to adequately clean and disinfect all the surface areas. One of the most common devices which can harbor organic matrices are lumened devices, such as suctions. Failure to adequately clean the inside of these devices leaves organic soil on the inside surfaces. Once exposed to sterilization, the organic soil is usually fixed in place and almost impossible to clean. Channeled devices are amongst the most difficult to clean because the internal surfaces are not directly observable. If you check out the coupon below, Healthmark now does have a means for directly inspecting these areas.

Sincerely,

Ralph J. Basile

In the United States, NSF International is the standards writing body that most of the industry looks to for guidance on residential and commercial dishwashers. NSF happens to be located near us in Ann Arbor, Michigan, but its reach is worldwide.
