Mayhem in May

It is Sunday afternoon and I am looking at the calendar for the month of May. The only description is mayhem. It begins with the International Association of Healthcare Centeral Service Materials Management (IAHCSMM) meeting in Alberqueque the first week of May. This is followed a week later by the ASTM (formerly American Society for Testing & Materials) International Committee F04 conference in Phoenix, including discussions on suitable test soils for validation of reprocessing instructions for surgical instruments, which is work item #WK33439.

Then comes the week of May 20, when both the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses (SGNA) meeting in Scottsdale, AZ and the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) Sterilization Standards Committee meeting in Alexandria, VA. Amongst the major events at AAMI is continued work on the hot topics coming out of the AAMI/FDA Summit last Fall, including new guidance for flexible endoscope reprocessing, standardized templates for device reprocessing instructions (IFU's) and human factors design considerations for reprocessing of medical devices.

Not enough for you? Well for those of us in Michigan, we have our State CS meeting at the end of that week, where Healthmark will host a reception Wednesday night featuring a reprisal of the Clean Brothers. Perhaps your State association has a meeting in May too?

Education is key to moving forward. At IAHCSMM education takes center stage. Programs focused on the profession of sterile processing will rule the days. Our own Ray Taurasi will present Sunday April 29th at 4pm, "Is Your CSSD Team Really Committed to Service Excellence."

In professional golf, Saturday is called moving day. In our industry, May is moving month. Let the mayhem begin.
