Selecting the Right PPE
ISSUE NO. 643
Throughout every department in a healthcare facility, the amount of PPE needed can vary. Not all PPE are the same and depending on the type of work you are performing, you may require additional protection. OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens Guidelines (29 CFR 1910.1030) require employers to protect workers who are occupationally exposed to blood and other potentially infectious materials.

When working with such hazardous items, it's important to be prepared with the appropriate PPE. This can include being covered from head to toe including face shields, gowns, gloves and boot covers. It is key to have something that is comfortable and lightweight. However, the highest priority is that you are wearing a barrier of the highest quality to keep staff safe from contaminants. When using PPE, be sure to do a visual inspection of disposable garments to ensure there are no rips or holes. When finished, always dispose of the materials as you would for anything else considered to be biohazardous.
