Unclean Strikes Again!
Cleaning matters seem to be appearing in the limelight more and more lately. Recently the JCAHO released a statement that they will be focusing more on the complete process when it comes to sterilization and that means asking about cleaning and how items are being cleaned.

Last week the FDA informed healthcare professionals of instances in which pieces of tissue have remained within arthroscopic shavers, a device used in orthopedic surgical procedures, even after the cleaning process was believed to have been completed according to the manufacturer's instructions. Since retained tissue in these devices can compromise the entire sterilization process, FDA is actively working with the manufacturers of these devices to gather more data about this situation and to understand its potential public health impact. FDA encourages facilities that use any of these types of devices to evaluate the adequacy of their cleaning procedures and has provided recommendations for minimizing the potential risk to patients.

The question I pose is "What are you doing to make sure your process is one of the best when it comes to cleaning and cleaning verification?"  If you need help in this area, here are some proven solutions.

Take care and remember to

Cleaning in Tight Spots with Disposable Brushes

FlexistemThe Flexistem Nylon/Fleece combination brush is used in the decontamination area for cleaning all types of lumen/cannulated items and the box lock area of surgical instruments.

Cleaning any type of lumen/cannulated type item like a suction tube always use the proper size cleaning brush for each lumen/cannulated item. Match the French size of the item you are cleaning with the brush. The length of the brush used varies based on the length of the item being cleaned.
The Flexistem brushes come in both different diameter and length.
You can cut the correct length needed for cleaning and this reduces waste.

Decontamination area usage
  • Used to clean the walls of all box lock type instruments  can also be used to clean inside of cannulated / lumen items.
  • Move the Fleece style brush between the box lock areas to remove any debris.
  • The box lock of a hemostat might not close because of residual soil, cleaning this area is very important.
  • Cleaning a lumen / cannulated item is done by allowing the brush to completely exit the lumen/tube then draw back the brush through the lumen/tube. You repeat this action as many times as needed.
