February is American Heart Month. It became a federally designated
event in February 1964, proclaimed by President Lyndon B. Johnson via Proclamation 3566. It's the ideal time for Americans to think about prioritizing their heart health and encourage their friends, families and communities to get involved in spreading awareness
of the importance of working towards a healthy heart.
Go Red for Women®
is an American Heart Association global initiative to end heart disease and stroke in women. Launched in 2004, they have quickly expanded into a worldwide movement dedicated to removing the barriers women face in achieving good health and wellbeing. Heart
disease is the No. 1 killer of women, killing more women than all forms of cancer combined.
According to the University of California Irvine, everyone can benefit
from these heart-healthy practices:
1: Exercise regularly
2: Quit smoking
3: Lose weight
4: Eat heart-friendly foods
5: Eat chocolate and drink wine (in moderation)
6: Don’t overeat
7: Learn to manage stress
No matter your age, it’s important to consider a healthy diet, exercise
and supporting an organization in the spirit of American Heart Month.
