Transporting Instruments Safely

ISSUE NO. 753

When you think about  “Personal Protection Equipment”, you may immediately start to picture face masks, gowns, gloves, boots and other attire. What about the products that are safely transporting surgical instruments and other equipment after use to the reprocessing department? These items can protect you, your patients and other staff from the contaminated items in transport.

Products like the SST Tray System provide safe handling and transportation of soiled reusable instruments in compliance with OSHA Guidelines. SSTs are three-part container systems: solid base tray, SteriStrainer drain basket and cover. Placed near the procedure site, the tray system is used to collect the instruments. Covered, it is then safely transported to the decontamination site. There, the cover is removed, and the SteriStrainer is lifted out of the solution and the decontamination process safely begins.

When transporting surgical instruments and other equipment, it’s also important to communicate to your staff and other departments whether the items transported are clean or biohazardous. Use of labels is important to implement in your department's process in order to safely identify the status of the contents inside.
