You may have heard it all before, this test is not for high powered
washers...this test is meant to be used with the manufacturer's product. What you may not have heard, is that the TOSI® (Test Object Surgical Instrument) is meant to simulate cleaning of surgical instruments. When you are in the business of properly reprocessing
surgical instruments, that is exactly what you need to hear.
The TOSI® is the only test of its kind that is designed to test your
washer to make sure surgical instruments are being cleaned effectively by revealing the hidden areas of instruments. The TOSI®
is dried blood soil on a stainless steel coupon (like dried blood on a stainless steel surgical instrument). We mount the plate in a plastic holder with a graduated gap. This is just like the areas on a surgical instrument which are blocked from direct spray
action, such as the box locks. The routine use of this test will help ensure that your instrument washer is performing at a consistent level, enhancing the routine visual inspection of instruments. The TOSI® complies with new AAMI and AORN guidelines as well
as ASTM Guide D7225.
