Heartfelt Moments: Celebrating Love & American Heart Month

ISSUE NO. 818

February is a month full of love, and what better way to celebrate than by taking care of your most important organ—your heart! This month, we observe American Heart Month to raise awareness about heart health and inspire us all to live a heart-healthy life. Plus, with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to show both your loved ones and your own heart some extra TLC.

Why is Heart Health Important? Your heart is working non-stop to pump blood, deliver oxygen, and keep your body energized. That’s why taking care of it is essential! Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the U.S., but the good news is that many heart conditions are preventable with simple lifestyle changes.

Simple ways to keep your heart happy:

  1. Move Your Body: Whether it's a brisk walk, a dance party in your living room, or a workout at the gym—regular exercise strengthens your heart. Aim for 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week!
  2. Eat Heart-Healthy: Fruits, veggies, whole grains, and healthy fats (like avocados and nuts) can keep your heart in top shape. Remember, small changes can make a big difference!
  3. Don’t Forget Your Mental Health: Stress can take a toll on your heart. Taking time to relax, meditate, or enjoy a good laugh can help lower stress levels and benefit your heart.
  4. Check Your Numbers: Regularly monitor your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels. Catching early signs of heart disease can lead to better outcomes.

This Valentine’s Day, why not give the gift of heart health? Instead of just chocolates (although, dark chocolate can be heart-healthy in moderation!), why not surprise your partner, family, or friends with a healthy, homemade meal or a thoughtful activity that promotes well-being?

Here are some heart-healthy Valentine’s Day ideas:

  • Cook a heart-healthy dinner together. Try a dish with lean proteins, veggies, and whole grains.
  • Take a walk or hike. Enjoy quality time and fresh air while keeping your hearts pumping!
  • Gift a fitness tracker or a heart-health book. It’s a meaningful and thoughtful gift that encourages ongoing wellness.

Lastly, don’t forget to check in on your own heart health during this month. If you haven’t already, schedule an appointment with your doctor to get a heart check-up, and take a moment to reflect on how you can continue to nurture your heart every day.
