Is Magnetism Hiding in Your Instrument Sets?

ISSUE NO. 839

Sometimes instruments just don’t behave the way they should. Tips cling together, tools attract debris, or items misalign in the tray. What you can’t see might be to blame: residual magnetism.

Instruments can become magnetized during reprocessing, ultrasonic cleaning, or even routine handling. While it’s easy to miss, magnetism can damage delicate tools and interfere with surgical precision, especially in microsurgical or neurosurgical settings.

To help you catch this early, we’re excited to introduce the Magnetic Field Tester, a simple, effective way to check instruments for hidden magnetization before they cause problems downstream.

It works like this: Just place the instrument on the black side of the tool and observe the green film. If the instrument is magnetized, a distinct rainbow-like pattern appears, confirming the presence of a magnetic field. It’s fast and easy to use in any SPD setting.

And if you do find magnetization? We've got a solution for that too. The Demagnetizer is built for continuous duty and flexible use, whether on the counter or in your hand. Simply pass magnetized instruments over the faceplate to remove magnetic fields and restore safe, proper function.

Even small tools can make a big difference. If magnetism is sneaking into your sets, we’ve got your back with solutions that fit right into your workflow.

TIP OF THE WEEK

Just like magnetism, internal damage or performance issues in complex instruments like shaver handpieces often go unnoticed without proper testing. Want to sharpen your inspection skills?
